General Zia-ul-Haq, a prominent figure in Pakistan's political history, served as the country's Prime Minister from 1977 until his untimely demise in 1988. Zia-ul-Haq was born on August 12, 1924, in Jalandhar, British India (now part of present-day Punjab, India). He received his early education in India before joining the British Indian Army during World War II.

After the partition of India in 1947, Zia-ul-Haq opted to serve in the Pakistan Army. He displayed remarkable leadership skills and gradually rose through the ranks, gaining recognition for his military acumen. In 1976, he was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff, the highest-ranking military position in Pakistan.

Zia-ul-Haq's tenure as Prime Minister began in 1977 when he orchestrated a bloodless coup against the then Prime Minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, following a period of political turmoil and allegations of corruption. Zia-ul-Haq declared martial law and imposed strict military rule in the country. He sought to implement his vision of an Islamic state, introducing policies that emphasized conservative Islamic values in governance and society.

During his time in power, Zia-ul-Haq implemented significant changes in Pakistan's political and social fabric. He initiated the process of Islamization, which involved incorporating Islamic principles into the country's legal system and introducing measures such as Sharia courts. Zia-ul-Haq's administration also prioritized strengthening ties with the United States, particularly during the Soviet-Afghan War, when Pakistan played a crucial role in supporting Afghan mujahideen fighters.

However, Zia-ul-Haq's rule was not without controversy. His government faced criticism for human rights abuses, curbing press freedom, and suppressing political dissent. In 1988, tragedy struck when Zia-ul-Haq's plane, carrying several top military officials, including himself, crashed near the city of Bahawalpur, resulting in his death.
